St. Johnston |
|
This is an updated St. Johnston page. Eventually, I'll integrate the old stuff; in the meanwhile, you can view the old page here . There is an extensive official St. Johnston and Carrigans website. You might notice that some of the images take a while to download, but they are well worth the wait. The new pictures were taken during May and June 2005. There have been a lot of changes to St. Johnston in the last ten years. As someone put it, from 1960 to 1995 there were hardly two houses built in St. Johnston, now there are two new housing estates. |

The picturesThere are three copies of the pictures: (i) the thumbnails -- visible; (ii) medium sized (quarter of the original), click on thumbnail; and (iii) large (half of original), click on 'Large'. If anyone likes any of the pictures, I will usually have one that is double the size of 'Large' and can supply it on request (e.g. I can put it on the web for you to download, see email address below). |

Egg Quay or Boathole. This was formerly used as a small quay. In the background there is a bridge formerly used by the Great Northern Railway line (Belfast-Portadown-Omagh-St. Johnston-Derry (Foyle Road). The GNR line closed in 1965. |
Egg Quay in the 1940s or 1950s. Supplied by Bill Wilson (Peterborough), from a short book on the Foyle Fisheries by Alex Carlin. Note the sand barge in the background. Sand was harvested a few miles south on the Foyle; the barge was propelled by 'poling', punt style. Anyone know the name of the operator of that boat? |
