The pictures


St. Johnston, looking north. Soccer and cricket grounds prominent in the mid-right. The 'Long Lane' is in the top left, heading north. Lough Swilly evident in the mid-top, with Inch Island to the right and the Scalp (Burnfoot) to the right of that.


River Foyle just north of St. Johnston. News houses at Carrigans in mid-left top. Maheramason and then Newbuildings top-right; Derry just where the river is hidden.


Carrigans Coxtown road in the mid-left. Maheramason at the bend on the right; then, further north, Newbuildings and Derry. Hills at Castlenock in the far distance.


Coxtown. St. Johnston-Newtoncunninghan road. The hills in the middle horizon are Grianan and Holywell Hill (transmitter); Then beyond that we have Fahan hills and the Scalp. Finally, beyond that, on the top-left we have the Urris Hills with Rahtin and Mamore Gap evident.

Looking north towards Grianan (mid-left). To the right and behind Grianan, the Scalp. The behind thta, from the left Barnan Mor (Mintiaghs) and Slieve Snaght peeping up behind the Scalp.


Monreagh and Coxtown in the near foreground. Lough Swilly in the distance; old railway embankment below Burt Castle is visible. Inch Island on the very right. Hills behind Rathmllan form the horizon.

Looking north to Inch Island and the mouth of Lough Swilly.


Looking back south. St. Johnston is at the corner where the river Foyle straightens towards the south. Binnion Hill just visible to the right.


St. Johnston. The main road weaves bottom to top. Railway Road and the cross-roads and Main Street go diagonally left-right. Fleming's Engineering Works (green roofed building) on the right.

Just south of Bready, looking south. Note the islands in the river Foyle. Thickens out to become Corkan Isle (or so the OS map says). Porthall on the right; nothe the line of trees and then the bridge across the west (right hand) channel. I think that's the route of the Derry-St.Johnston-Porthall-Strabane railway line (Great Northern, close 1965). Croghan Hill (??) in the distance. The small river on the left is the Glenmornan; it flows down through Ballymagorry. To the right of that, with the red lock-works is the former Strabane Canal. Porthall House visible on the mid-right.

Looking west over Binnion Hill. Swilly Burn joins the Foyle in the top-right. Botton right we see the Glenmornan and Burndennett rivers joining the Foyle.
